Getting to Krk: Bridge, Airport and Ferries
Krk is the only large island in the Kvarner Bay that you can reach without a ferry. The Krk Bridge connects the island to the mainland, and Rijeka Airport is actually located on Krk. Here's everything you need to know about getting here.
Via the Krk Bridge
The Krk Bridge opened in 1980 and connects the mainland near Kraljevica with the island. It has been toll-free since 2020. From the bridge, it's just a few kilometers to Omišalj and Njivice, about half an hour to Krk town, and a little longer to Baška in the south.
By car
From Germany and Austria, you usually drive through Slovenia to Rijeka and then on to the Krk Bridge. From Munich, the journey takes about six to seven hours, depending on traffic. Saturdays are the busiest, as many holiday apartments change guests that day.
By plane
Rijeka Airport is located on Krk near Omišalj, just a few minutes from the bridge. It is served mainly during the summer season. From the airport, you can get to your accommodation by rental car, taxi or transfer.
By bus
Long-distance buses go to Rijeka, and some also run directly to the island. From Rijeka, buses connect the towns on Krk. On the island itself, buses run between the larger towns, but less frequently outside the season.
Ferries from Krk
From the Valbiska ferry port, car ferries sail to Merag on Cres and, in season, to Lopar on Rab. This makes it easy to take day trips from Krk to the neighboring islands.
During the Bora
In strong Bora winds, the Krk Bridge may be closed to caravans, motorhomes, motorcycles and high-sided vehicles, and in rare cases to all vehicles. If a storm warning is issued, check the current traffic report.
