Best Time to Visit the Kvarner Bay: Weather, Sea Temperature and the Bora
The Kvarner Bay has a mild Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny summers and mild winters. When the best time to visit is depends on what you have in mind: swimming, hiking, cycling or exploring towns. Here's an overview of the year.
June and September: the insider tips
For many people, June or September is the best time to visit. The sea is warm enough for swimming, the days are long and sunny, and it's much quieter than in high summer. Accommodation is often cheaper, and it's easier to find a spot on the beaches.
July and August: high summer
July and August are hot and dry, and the sea usually reaches 24 to 26 degrees in high summer. This is when the most is going on, with festivals, concerts and markets taking place almost every evening. It's best to plan excursions for early in the morning and use the midday hours for a break in the shade.
Spring and autumn: time for activities
April, May and October are ideal for hiking and cycling. Nature is in bloom in spring, and in autumn the sea stays pleasant for a long time. Swimming in May is possible for the hardy, and in October it's often still very nice on warm days.
Winter: quiet and mild
In winter, many restaurants and accommodations are closed, but you get to experience the towns without any hustle and bustle. During Advent, many towns have small Christmas markets.
Bora, Jugo and Maestral
The winds are typical of the Kvarner. The Bora is a cold, gusty wind from the northeast that blows mainly in winter, but can also appear briefly in summer. It brings clear air, but it can stop ferries and close the Krk Bridge to certain vehicles. The Jugo is a warm, humid wind from the southeast that brings clouds, waves and sometimes rain. In summer, the Maestral provides a pleasant breeze in the afternoon.
