Bura on Cres: What You Need to Know
Anyone holidaying in Kvarner will sooner or later meet the bura. This mostly north-easterly downslope wind forms when cold air builds up behind the Velebit mountains and then pours over the passes down to the coast. It is strongest near Senj, where gusts above 200 km/h are possible.
What it means for your holiday:
• In a strong bura ferries may be cancelled, including the Cres links Brestova - Porozina and Valbiska - Merag.
• The Krk bridge closes at peak strength and high-sided vehicles are ordered off the road.
• Small boats can capsize. Leave SUP, kayak and rental boats on land on such days.
The good side: in spring, summer and autumn the bura is usually milder and brings crystal-clear air and long views. Many locals swear it is good for mood and health.
Insider tips:
• Check the forecast before every ferry crossing – the bura can arrive at short notice.
• On bura days, coves on the sheltered west side of the island are often calmer.
• Secure parasols well – gusts come suddenly.
