Griffon Vultures in Beli

Cres is one of the last strongholds of the endangered griffon vulture in Croatia. With some luck you will see these huge birds circling above the cliffs in the north and west of the island, for example around Beli and Orlec.

The best place to start is the Visitor and Rescue Centre for Griffon Vultures in Beli. It is housed in the former village school and run by the Priroda public institution.

What to expect:

• A multimedia exhibition about the vultures and life in Tramuntana

• A rescue area where injured birds are nursed and later released

• A courtyard with a large cedar, drinks made from local fruit and herbs, and a small souvenir shop

A 2017 survey counted at least 108 breeding pairs in Kvarner, up from around 60 in the 1990s.
