Lubenice and Sveti Ivan Beach

Lubenice sits on a cliff edge about 378 metres above the open sea. Only a handful of people live here year round, yet the spot was a prehistoric hillfort and later a Roman post.

Our tip: arrive early in the morning. You will have the viewpoint almost to yourself and the walk down is still cool.

The way down:

• The path to the pebble beach Sveti Ivan starts in the village and is steep and narrow.

• Allow about 45 minutes down and considerably longer for the climb back.

• Pack sturdy shoes, plenty of water and food, as there are no facilities at the beach.

From the beach, marked trail 327 continues to Žanja bay and the Blue Cave (Plava Grota). You can swim into the main entrance, and on summer afternoons the water inside glows in shades of blue.

Back in the village, visit the Gothic church of St Anthony by the car park and the small sheep farming museum. In summer the Lubenice Music Evenings take place on the square in front of the parish church.
