Osor: Canal, Swing Bridge and Music Evenings
Osor lies exactly where Cres and Lošinj meet. The two islands were originally one, and it was the Romans who dug the narrow canal that separates them today. A swing bridge crosses it and opens for passing boats.
Our tip: time a stop for the bridge opening. When the roadway turns aside and sailing boats glide through the narrow gap, traffic waits briefly, but the spectacle is worth it. Exact times are posted locally.
In the village:
• The former Cathedral of the Assumption was built between 1463 and 1497.
• Sculptures by Ivan Meštrović and other artists stand between the stone houses.
• Only around two dozen people live in Osor year-round.
Since the mid-1970s the Osor Music Evenings (Osorske glazbene večeri) have turned the Renaissance cathedral into a summer concert stage. The focus is classical music, with special attention to new Croatian works.
Practical: Osor belongs administratively to Mali Lošinj and makes a good stop on the way to Lošinj. Several campsites are nearby.
