Holiday with a Dog on Cres
Cres is a quiet island close to nature, which makes it a dream destination for many dog owners. A few things are worth knowing in advance.
Dog beaches and dog-friendly spots:
• Around Cres town, swimming spots at Camp Kovačine, the ACI Marina and Gavza bay are named as dog-friendly.
• At Camp Slatina in Martinšćica dogs may swim in yellow-marked zones at small pebble coves. There are dog showers and a dog trainer in summer.
• The tourist board also lists remote coves such as Plave Grote, Mali Bok and Sveti Blaž as dog-friendly.
Rules to know:
• According to Camp Slatina, dogs must be kept on a leash across the whole island, and on a short leash (1.5 m) in the camp and on the beach.
• Be able to show valid vaccinations and always pick up after your dog.
• In high season regular bathing beaches are usually off-limits for dogs, so follow local signs.
Practical:
• There is no vet practice on Cres. The nearest clinic is in Mali Lošinj, about an hour by car from Cres town.
• In summer, walk your dog early in the morning or in the evening, as the karst heats up strongly and shade is rare.
• Sheep roam freely on pastures, so keep your dog on a leash there.
