Gradec Castle

The ancient fortress of Gradec, dating back to the 12th century, is considered the birthplace of the powerful Frankopan family – one of the most important noble families in Croatian history. From here, they began their rise and shaped large parts of the region.

What makes this fortress especially unique is its defensive design: there was no classic entrance through the walls. Instead, access was only possible via a wooden structure placed above the wall. In case of danger, it could be quickly destroyed, making the fortress almost impossible to enter.

Next to the ruins, you’ll also find the remains of the Church of St Nicholas, built in 1325. It was used for centuries until the Frankopan family left Gradec, and was later restored and known as the Church of the Holy Spirit.

Today, the site offers not only a glimpse into medieval history, but also stunning views over the surrounding landscape and vineyards.
