Frankopan Castle

The Frankopan Castle on Kamplin Square is one of the most important historical landmarks in Krk City. Built by the noble Frankopan family over several centuries, it reflects the power and influence of one of Croatia’s most important noble dynasties.

The oldest part of the complex is the square tower, dating back to 1191, as confirmed by an inscription above the entrance. It was built during the time of Bishop Ivan and the princes Bartol and Vid, with the support of the local community.

Later, a round tower was added in the northern part, likely in the 13th century. The entire fortress complex was completed before 1348 and later restored around 1480 and 1600.

A special detail is the stone relief of the Lion of St Mark, symbolizing Venetian rule, with an inscription from the year 1500. The complex also includes additional towers, a guard house and former living quarters for soldiers.
