History of Krk Town
Krk City History
Krk City is one of the oldest towns in the Adriatic, with a history that goes back over 2000 years. It was originally settled by the Illyrians before becoming an important Roman city. Parts of the old city walls and street layout still follow this ancient structure.
During the Middle Ages, Krk was ruled by the Frankopan family, one of the most powerful noble families in Croatia. They left a strong mark on the city, including fortifications and important buildings that can still be seen today.
Over the centuries, Krk was influenced by different powers, including the Venetians and later the Austro Hungarian Empire. Each period added new elements to the architecture and culture, which is why the city today feels like a mix of different historical layers.
Walking through the old town, you can still feel this long history in the stone streets, churches and walls that have been standing for centuries.
