History of Punat
Punat is one of the oldest settlements on the island of Krk, with a history closely connected to the sea. Its name is believed to come from the Latin word pons, meaning bridge, referring to a narrow crossing that once existed in the bay.
For centuries, Punat was a traditional fishing and shipbuilding village. The protected bay made it an ideal place for boats, and maritime life shaped the identity of the town.
A key part of Punat’s history is the small island of Košljun, located in the middle of the bay. Since the 15th century, it has been home to a Franciscan monastery, which became an important cultural and spiritual center.
Today, Punat is known for its marina, one of the largest in Croatia, continuing its long connection to the sea.
