Island Hopping in the Kvarner: Ferries Between Krk, Cres, Lošinj and Rab
The islands of the Kvarner Bay are so close together that a trip to the neighboring island almost suggests itself. Whether you travel by car, bike or on foot, you can get from island to island by ferry or catamaran. Here's what connections there are and what to keep in mind.
From Krk to Cres and Lošinj
A car ferry runs all year round from the Valbiska ferry port on the west coast of Krk to Merag on Cres. The crossing takes only about half an hour. From Merag, you drive across the island to Osor, where a swing bridge connects Cres with Lošinj. There is a second ferry connection to Cres from Brestova in Istria to Porozina in the north of the island.
From Krk to Rab
In the summer season, a car ferry connects Valbiska on Krk with Lopar on Rab. This makes it possible to take a day trip to Rab's sandy beaches. You can reach Rab all year round by ferry from Stinica on the mainland to Mišnjak.
Catamarans from Rijeka
From Rijeka, passenger-only catamarans run to the islands, including Cres, Mali Lošinj and Rab. They are fast and convenient if you are traveling without a car.
Ferry tips
In July and August, and especially on Saturdays, there can be long waits at the ferry ports. Arrive early, especially for the first or last ferry of the day. Tickets are available at the port and often online as well. Timetables change with the season, so check the current times with the ferry operators such as Jadrolinija or Rapska plovidba before you travel. In strong Bora winds, ferries may be cancelled.
Ideas for an island loop
A popular route: Krk – Valbiska–Merag ferry – Cres with Lubenice and Beli – over the Osor bridge to Lošinj – and back. Or in summer: Krk – ferry to Lopar – sandy beaches and old town of Rab – back to the mainland via Stinica.
