Kvarner with Your Dog: Dog Beaches, Rules and Tips

The Kvarner Bay is a great destination for a holiday with your dog: a short journey, plenty of nature and dedicated dog beaches in many towns. To make sure everyone has a relaxed holiday, there are a few rules you should know.

Entering Croatia with a dog

To enter Croatia, your dog needs an EU pet passport, a microchip and a valid rabies vaccination. The vaccination must have been given at least 21 days before you travel. It's best to talk to your vet before the trip.

Dog beaches

Dogs are not allowed on most regular swimming beaches. However, many towns have designated dog beaches, often a little outside town in quiet coves. On Krk, you'll find dog beaches in several coastal towns, and there are also some on Cres, Rab and along the mainland coast. You can find the current beaches in the list below.

Out and about with your dog

In towns, dogs usually have to be kept on a leash. On ferries and in public transport, dogs must be on a leash, and in some cases a muzzle is required. In many restaurants and cafés, dogs are welcome on the terrace – just ask first.

Heat and health

Summers get hot. Walk your dog early in the morning and in the evening, always carry water and avoid hot asphalt and stones in the midday sun. Sea urchins along the shore and ticks in the bushes can also be an issue. You'll find vets in the larger towns, also listed below.

Accommodation

Many holiday apartments and campsites accept dogs, often for a small extra fee. It's best to ask when booking whether there is a fenced garden or a dog beach nearby.
