Swimming among Freshwater Springs in Povile

If you want a real cool-down in high summer, head to Povile, just a few minutes south-east of Novi Vinodolski. Along this shore, freshwater springs rise from the karst rock into the sea. You can spot them as round rings or slight shimmering on the surface. Swim into one and you suddenly feel much cooler water, a surprising sensation on a hot day.

The tourist board specifically mentions these springs as a feature of Povile. Start at the pebble beach in front of the little harbour and explore the small, well-kept bathing spots along the shore. Afterwards, walk the shore path towards Muroskva or out to the Punta Mandalena headland with its tiny church of St Magdalene.

Our tip: bring a snorkel mask. Where fresh and salt water mix, the water often shimmers, and the play of light and current is fascinating. In Smokvica Krmpotska, south of Klenovica, similar springs called vrulje keep the water exceptionally clear.

With a dog, it is worth continuing to Mala Draga cove, about 1 km towards Klenovica, where there is an official dog beach with a drinking pool and shade. That way you combine a relaxed beach day with a natural phenomenon you will not find everywhere on the Adriatic.
