Frankopan Castle and Kvadrac Tower

The castle in the centre of Novi Vinodolski dates from the 13th century, built under the Counts of Krk, later known as the Frankopans. According to the town, the Vinodol Code was written here on 6 January 1288. After the fall of the Zrinski and Frankopan families in 1670/71 it decayed and was partly restored in the early 20th century. Its landmark is the square Kvadrac tower, also called Turnac, which hosts art exhibitions in summer and becomes Santa’s house in winter. The castle also houses the town museum and the reading room founded in 1845.
