Opatija Travel Guide: Kvarner, Croatia
Opatija is the oldest seaside resort on the Croatian Adriatic. As early as the 19th century, aristocrats and artists from all over Europe came here to spend the winter. Magnificent villas, well-kept parks and coffee houses still recall that era today. Sheltered by the Učka mountains, Opatija enjoys a mild climate all year round.
Lungomare: the seaside promenade
The landmark of the Riviera is the Lungomare, a seaside promenade around twelve kilometers long. It leads from the fishing village of Volosko through Opatija all the way to Lovran, past villas, gardens, small bathing spots and rocks right by the sea. Along the way you'll come across the statue Girl with the Seagull, one of the best-known photo spots in Croatia.
Villa Angiolina and the parks
In the center stands Villa Angiolina with its large park full of exotic plants, camellias and old trees. A stroll here is especially lovely in spring. Around the park you'll find historic hotels, pastry shops and concert stages.
Volosko and Lovran
In the small fishing village of Volosko you can sit in narrow alleys right by the harbor and enjoy fresh fish. Lovran, at the other end of the promenade, has a charming medieval old town and is known for its sweet chestnuts, which are celebrated in autumn at the Marunada festival.
Hiking in Učka Nature Park
Behind Opatija rises Učka Nature Park. Hiking trails take you all the way to the summit of Vojak, where on a clear day you can see across the entire Kvarner Bay to Istria and the islands. The Vela draga canyon with its rock towers is also worth a trip.
Swimming and indulging
The beaches around Opatija are mostly concrete platforms, pebble coves and rocks with ladders into the water – ideal for swimming in clear water. The Riviera is also considered a gourmet region with many great restaurants and pastry shops.
