Lovran marron (sweet chestnut)

The marun is a special sweet chestnut from Lovran: larger and sweeter than ordinary chestnuts, with a lighter shell that peels easily. According to the tourist board it belongs to the Marradi variety. It was once exported to Germany, Austria and Italy and made into flour, a coffee substitute and medica brandy with chestnut honey. Harvest is in October, celebrated at Marunada.
