750 steps up to Mošćenice
Mošćenička Draga is known for its long pebble beach Sipar. The real gem lies above it: the hilltop village of Mošćenice, about 173 m above the sea.
The way up:
• According to Wikipedia around 750 steps lead from Sv. Ivan beach up to the village. Allow half an hour to an hour and bring water.
• You enter through the town gate bearing the Habsburg crest and the year 1654.
What awaits you:
• Narrow lanes, stone houses and views across Kvarner Bay to Rijeka, Krk and Cres.
• The ethnographic collection by the gate with costumes and tools.
• Next to it the Mošćenički toš, an olive press about 300 years old.
• St. Andrew’s church, where candles are blessed for Candlemas in early February.
The old village has been protected heritage since 1968.
Insider tip: climb in the late afternoon for warm light on the coast, then return for an evening swim.
