Učka on a clear day
Učka rises right behind the riviera and is the quickest way from sea to mountain. Its highest peak, Vojak, is 1,401 m high and topped by a stone tower from 1911.
Plan it like this:
• Head first for Poklon pass at about 930 m with the nature park visitor centre, an exhibition in five themes, a café and a shop.
• From Poklon an easy 7 km loop with about 450 m of ascent leads to Vojak.
• Families can choose the flat Stražica – Sapaćica trail (6.5 km) or the short Plas trail on the ridge.
• Keen hikers start at sea level in Lovran or Medveja, about 1,400 m of ascent.
Insider tip: wait for a day with clear air, often after a bora wind. Then the view from the tower reaches across Kvarner Bay to the islands and Istria. Bring a jacket, it is much cooler up there.
Good to know: visitor centre prices vary by season, check the park website.
