Rab cake as a souvenir

Rapska torta – a spiral almond cake with Maraschino – keeps for weeks and travels well. Legend says it was served to Pope Alexander III in 1177 when he consecrated the cathedral; nuns of St Anthony’s and later Benedictines of St Andrew’s baked it. Once a luxury of rich families, it now features at every island wedding. The tourist board recommends the Vilma pastry shop, which also sells baškotini, smokvenjak and muštaćoni. Buy it towards the end of your stay, but not on the last evening. It even appeared on a 2020 Croatian stamp.
