Rapska torta (Rab cake)

The island’s sweet emblem: a cake of almonds and Maraschino liqueur, traditionally shaped as a spiral. Legend says it was first served in 1177 to Pope Alexander III when he consecrated Rab’s cathedral, baked by the nuns of St Anthony’s convent. Once a luxury of wealthy families, it is now made for weddings and christenings and is a popular souvenir because it keeps well. It appeared on a Croatian stamp in 2020.
