561 steps to Trsat
The best way up to Trsat is on foot. The Trsat stairs climb 561 steps from the Rječina river to the shrine, and every landing has a story.
A little history:
Petar Kružić, captain of Klis fortress, built the first section in 1531. The upper part was added in 1725, and the lower portal is dated 1745. Small votive chapels donated by dignitaries line the way. Pilgrims once climbed here to the shrine which, legend says, held the House of Nazareth from 1291 to 1294.
How to do it:
• Start at the lower portal near the mouth of the Rječina.
• Take breaks – the views over the city and port improve with every step.
• At the top: the shrine, Trsat Castle with café and viewpoint, and the Tarsa tavern.
If your legs give up, take city bus no. 2 back down. Bring comfortable shoes and water, and in summer go early morning or late afternoon.
