Trsat Castle

Perched 138 m above the city, Trsat Castle is one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast. A Liburnian lookout stood here in prehistoric times, and the site is recorded as a parish centre in 1288. Count Laval Nugent bought it in 1826, restored it and in 1843 opened the first museum in what was then Croatia. Today you will find the Nugent mausoleum, a gallery, a permanent exhibition, a café in the elliptical tower and one of the best views over Rijeka and Kvarner Bay. Summer brings open-air concerts and theatre. Take bus no. 2 or walk up the Trsat stairs.
