Korzo and the City Tower: Rijeka’s living room
To understand Rijeka, start on the Korzo. The pedestrian street is the city’s living room: people drink coffee, meet friends and stroll here.
Where the walls once stood:
The Korzo follows the line of the old city walls. When Emperor Joseph II allowed them to be demolished in the late 18th century, classical palaces rose along the new street.
The City Tower:
In the middle stands the landmark City Tower, once the gate into the walled town, medieval and probably on late antique foundations. Look for the Baroque portal with the imperial arms and reliefs of Emperors Leopold and Charles VI. The city clock has ticked on top since the 17th century. The city arms, granted in 1659, show a double-headed eagle holding an urn of flowing water, with the motto INDEFICIENTER – inexhaustible.
Suggested walk:
• Through the tower into the Old Town, past the Roman Arch to the church with the Leaning Tower.
• Back to the Korzo and on to the market with its splendid fish hall.
• Finish with a stroll along the breakwater.
The tourist office is right on the Korzo at no. 14.
