Rijeka with kids
Rijeka is surprisingly child-friendly, rain or shine.
When it rains:
• The Children’s House in the Benčić art quarter is described as Croatia’s first large building designed entirely for children, with space for creative and cultural activities.
• At the Astronomical Centre in an old fortress above the city, the planetarium dome shows films about the universe to up to 52 visitors. Reachable by city bus and fully accessible.
• The Peek&Poke museum in the Old Town is about childhood and computers.
When the sun shines:
• Ploče beach in Kantrida is large, with food and amenities.
• Trsat Castle with towers, a crypt and views is a small adventure. Climb the 561 steps if you are fit, or take bus no. 2.
• The Rijeka Tunnel, about 330 m beneath the Old Town, is a cool, exciting passage from the cathedral to Dolac school.
Festivals:
At the children’s carnival parade in late January (2027: 30 January) the little ones dress up. In summer the Summer on Gradina festival at Trsat Castle includes family events.
Tip: Benčić has a park and a resting spot by the stream – perfect for a break.
