City Market

The market has been the city’s belly since the 19th century. In 1880 two steel-and-glass pavilions designed by Izidor Vauchnig went up. The fish hall by Carlo Pergoli, finished in 1916 in Vienna Secession style, is a gem: Venetian sculptor Urban Bottasso made the capitals, four fountains and façade decoration with sea creatures and shells. Come in the morning when it is busiest.
