Stara vrata

The Old Gate, often called the Roman Arch, is the oldest surviving structure in Rijeka old town. It dates from late antiquity, when the town of Tarsatica stood here, and was not a triumphal arch but the main entrance to the military headquarters (principia). This base supplied the Claustra Alpium Iuliarum defensive line. Only the arch itself survives, as many of its stones were reused in medieval houses.
