Torpedo Launch Station

A key site of engineering history. In the early 1860s Rijeka local Giovanni Luppis proposed a coastal defence weapon, which Robert Whitehead turned into the fish-shaped torpedo. The prototype was tested in 1866, and in 1875 the Whitehead and Co. torpedo factory opened, described as the first in the world. The surviving launch station from 1930 simulated launches from ships and aircraft. It now stands by the sea in the west of the city as an industrial heritage monument.
