Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat

The largest pilgrimage centre in western Croatia. Legend says the Holy House of Nazareth rested on Trsat from 1291 to 1294 before moving on to Loreto. In 1367 Pope Urban V gave the Croats a painting of the Virgin as consolation. Franciscans have looked after the shrine since the 15th century, and in 1453 Martin Frankopan began a new church and monastery. After a fire in 1629 it was remodelled in Baroque style. Pope John Paul II visited in 2003, and a statue in front of the church has marked this since 2005. The treasury is also worth a look.
