Zarok Sandy Area
The Zarok sandy area near Baška is one of the most unique natural landscapes on the island of Krk. Scientists consider it a place of high geological and botanical importance, shaped over thousands of years.
The visible layers of sand and gravel tell a story of past climates. During the Ice Age, glaciers, rivers and streams formed these layers, alternating between colder and warmer periods. These natural processes created the striking formations that can still be seen today.
In the past, sand was taken from this area for construction and even used to expand nearby beaches. These interventions damaged parts of this fragile ecosystem and affected rare and endemic plant species that once grew here.
Today, Zarok remains an important site for research. Its layers provide valuable insights into the history of the region and continue to be studied by scientists.
