Senj Travel Guide: Kvarner, Croatia
Senj is one of the oldest towns on the Adriatic, located right where the Velebit mountains drop almost vertically into the sea. This unique setting makes Senj a great destination for anyone who wants to combine history, nature and the sea. The town is also known for the Bora, a strong, cold wind that blows especially hard here.
Nehaj Fortress and the Uskoks
High above the town stands Nehaj Fortress, built in the 16th century. It was a stronghold of the Uskoks, who fought against the Ottoman Empire and Venice from Senj for decades. Today the fortress houses an exhibition on this history, and from the walls you have a wide view across the sea as far as Krk and Rab.
Old Town and Summer Carnival
In the old town you will find remains of the old town walls, narrow lanes, churches and small squares. Every year in August, Senj celebrates its famous Summer Carnival with parades and music.
Northern Velebit National Park
Senj is the gateway to Northern Velebit National Park. Nature lovers hike here through karst landscapes and forests and past steep cliffs. Particularly well known is the Premužić Trail, a historic hiking trail with fantastic views of the islands.
Bays and Beaches
Around Senj there are pebble beaches and small bays with very clear water. One highlight is Zavratnica Bay near Jablanac, a narrow inlet surrounded by cliffs that counts among the most beautiful bays on the Adriatic.
Getting There and Day Trips
Senj lies on the coastal road between Rijeka and Zadar. The ferries to the island of Rab depart from Stinica, south of Senj. This makes it easy to combine a stay in Senj with a trip to the island.
