Senj Old Town
Senj is one of the oldest towns on the northern Adriatic. The Romans used Senia as a stronghold in the 2nd century BC, and it later became a Roman municipium.
On a stroll through the old town you will find:
• Remains of the town walls with the Lipica, Leonova, Šabac and Trybenad towers
• The Great Gate (Velika vrata), end point of the Josephine Road across the mountains
• Uskočka Street and Cilnica Square with medieval buildings
• The votive church of St Mary of Arta, built by Senj sailors and filled with ship models, in Poets’ Park
• A sundial on the 45th parallel by the Adriatic coast road north of town
The cathedral and city museum are also in the centre, with Nehaj Fortress above.
