The bora in Senj

Senj is known as the capital of the bora. The cold downslope wind pours off Velebit over the Vratnik pass straight onto the town, with gusts near Senj of around 220 km/h. In February 2012 a bora of about 150 km/h dropped the temperature to minus 14 °C, iced up the seafront and drove waves of around 7 m onto the shore. In 1956 the sea off Senj even froze.

What it means for you:

• The bora often arrives suddenly, even under a clear blue sky. Sections of the D8 Adriatic coast road between Senj and Karlobag are closed to caravans, motorbikes and high vehicles in strong wind. Check traffic info before you drive.

• Ferries, such as Stinica to Rab, may be cancelled.

• At the beach the bora blows offshore. Never paddle out on airbeds, SUPs or kayaks when it blows.

• On Velebit the weather can change within hours. The Zavižan weather station provides current data.

The upside: after a bora the air is crystal clear and the view from Nehaj Fortress stretches far over Krk, Rab and Cres.
