Nehaj Fortress

Nehaj Fortress is the symbol of Senj. It was built in 1558 under Ivan Lenković, captain of the Croatian Military Frontier, on Trbušnjak hill above the old town.

The square keep is 18 m high and 23 m wide with walls 2 to 3.3 m thick. Five small corner turrets, around 100 loopholes and eleven gun ports recall its role as a lookout: from here the Uskoks watched sea and hinterland and received smoke and light signals from the islands and coast.

On the ground floor you will find a fireplace, garrison rooms, an arsenal, a courtyard cistern and the remains of the early Romanesque church of St George from the 11th century. The first floor housed the garrison and captain, the second a gun battery where concerts are held in summer. The roof terrace looks out over Krk, Rab, Goli, Prvić and Cres and the Velebit, Učka and Gorski kotar mountains.

In August the big parade of the Senj Summer Carnival starts here.
