Velebit Botanical Garden
The botanical garden near Zavižan was founded in 1967 by Prof. Fran Kušan of the Zagreb Faculty of Pharmacy. It lies at about 1,480 m around the Balinovačka ponikva sinkhole, covers 50 ha and sits within a 68 ha botanical reserve.
Around 300 plant species grow here, including Velebit rarities such as Degenia velebitica, the Velebit edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum ssp. krasense), Velebit carnation and Kitaibel’s primrose.
The best time is June and July when most plants are in flower. The walk takes about an hour on easy paths.
