Zavižan
Zavižan in Northern Velebit National Park is one of the best-known places in the range. At 1,594 m, below Vučjak peak, stands the weather station founded in 1953, the oldest high-mountain station in Croatia. Because Velebit divides continental and Mediterranean climates, it is especially important for forecasting.
Next to it is the Zavižan mountain hut, opened on 27 July 1953 on the site of a house destroyed in the war. Three generations of the Vukušić family have worked as weather observers and run the hut, which is why it stays open in winter. It has 28 beds and a webcam.
Around it rise Veliki Zavižan (1,676 m), Balinovac, Velika Kosa and Vučjak, with views of the Kvarner islands and Lika. The easiest access is via the Babić Siča main entrance, coming from Krasno or Oltari.
